But he says the installation shows the GUI alright, the problem is after the reboot of it: "-" is on the screen. or at least he could utilize the TTY's
exactly, I don't get why it would boot up on a live CD (usb), then after the install do this, weird.
I'm trying a reinstall and see if it work...

yea did the same thing on a reinstall. I'd really like the Gnome look but I guess it's not in the cards, unless someone can solve the mystery.
Well, Ubuntu 11.04 loads Unity by default. it should switch to 2d if your card does not handle it. I have no idea how to get Gnome 2.32 to load without the login screen.

Nah, this is first time for that, Kubuntu has worked on this before, if I have to I'll go that route for an upgrade, but I was hoping to do a switch over. had Kubuntu 8.04 in it before.

I could say that KDE is slightly lighter on resources than gnome2 , yet, I had gnome2 work on a 800MHz cpu and a 16-bit ati agp card
