Can't compile gdal in a virtualenv.

Hello there,

I'm having a heck of a time installing gdal using pip while inside of a virtualenv created with the --no-site-packages option.

First off, the error message tells me that it can't find gdal-config. That was fixed by changing the gdal_config variable in build/gdal/setup.cfg to read as follows:
gdal_config = /usr/bin/gdal-config

Now I get the following:

It seems to be failing to find a bunch of files that *do* exist on the local filesystem. Any ideas on how I can tell the installer where they are? I really want the virtualenv to be as self contained as possible, so I don't want to break down and run code against the system Python libs. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had the same issue. Despite being almost a year old this thread appears near the top of google searches, so hopefully this will help someone out.

It looks like the header files (gotten via gdal-devel) aren't being found - if they are on your local filesystem you can specify the include dirs when installing via pip.

pip install --no-install GDAL

Then cd into ENV/build/GDAL

python setup.py build_ext --include-dirs=<path_to_headers>

Then

pip install --no-download GDAL

Also, make sure that the version of GDAL that you have on your system matches the one you're trying to install via pip.
