Cannot connect to windows ad-hoc

Has anyone else found a solution to this? It's just an open ad-hoc network from a windows machine. Network Manager sees the network but when i try to connect it just idles and eventually gives up. I tried using the community documentation on wifidocs/ad-hoc but none of the documentation there helped.

I'm using a broadcom 4312 wireless card with the b43-fwcutter driver.
