What Icons did you use in the bottom panel (or dock)? I like the monochromatic icons on darker screens.

    Loved the retro Windows 2000.

First of all, does Xubuntu use any compositing window manager by any means (like compiz)? I'm having some issues with my laptop that would always crash when using a composite window manager, and in order to take the big step to Xubuntu, I want to know about this little aspect.
You can turn off compositing in Xubuntu. Applications --> Settings --> Settings Manager --> (Then) Setting Manger Tweaks --> Compositor --> (And then uncheck) Enable Display Compositing

Thanks to everyone for replies. I will also give it a try in a virtual machine.

The only annoying thing to me is that I can't make the panel transparent because the indicator applet stays opaque, and with some themes the applet has the color of a selected item... Other than that xfce-look really is good for themes and window decorations..
