Correct version of Ubuntu alternate install for my laptop?

    Hi all.

I'm trying to make sure I get the correct alternate installer for v11.04.

I'm doing the alternate install because I have had video issues with installing Ubuntu using the gui and am going try the text-only install and then deal with the video driver after that.

At any rate, I'm installing Ubuntu on a Toshiba X505-Q882 running Win7 Home Pro with an Intel i5 64bit processor. I'm looking on the Alternate Install page and see "natty-alternate-i386.iso". Is that the correct installer for my system? I want to make sure because it seems that 64bit versions of the installer are explicitly listed for AMD processors, but not Intel. Is this correct?

    Thanks for anyone's help!

You should use the amd64 version. The name "amd64" is just a "historical artifact" but works fine on Intel chips too. Kind of like how all tissues are called "Kleenex."

    Thanks! I'm glad I asked!

Why the heck don't they just change the file name to avoid confusion among us newbies!

In my high school in Minnesota we had an exchange student from South Africa - oh boy did she get some funny looks when she asked for a rubber in the classroom!!

AMD was the first company to push 64-bit processors. Because of that, the term AMD64 stuck. A lot of places now use "x86-64" or similar.

The unintended humour arising from different idioms in different countries is probably best dealt with elsewhere, e.g. the community cafe.

I think it's answered? Hence a lighter moment or two followed
