@waspbloke
Back with it again ..... theAnyway, unfortuantely I have to report that both my ATI laptops (a 32 and 64) won't play nicely. I haven't completely run out of ideas yet so I'll save asking for help for the moment, although I'm pretty sure my 6yo lappy just won't get there. My nice posh 64bit Dell really should be able to squeeze some sort of usable system out tho' so I'll persevere with that. Any general recommendations appreciated.
64 bit one you need to install HTOP
sudo apt-get install HTOP
....... and kill off the greeter ...... wait for about 30 secs or so and it will restart gdm ..... press unlock on the login screen and you are into Gnome Shell ........

The 32 bit ..... I had to just use nomodeset on the first screen from live CD to get it to boot ok .....
Then as it boots .....
click on the message that pops up about a problem with sessions ,,,, and it should go straight in ......
Once installed ...... the only error message again should be the Session one ........

Onward ...... just got the 32 bit onto my twin screen .....
All I have really done so far is to ....... start up LXDE ...... change the background to
the Tron Theme from earlier in this thread ....
then
add kdm
sudo apt-get install kdm
add cairo-dock
sudo aptitude install cairo-dock

Now to get the Themes sorted out ......
ok I am going to try to it this way ..... first ...
aptitude install libgtk-3-dev
we have dependency issues .... so I chose to downgrade
Ok we now have themes ..... and we do need to install using the Alien Converted packagesAccept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] n
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:
Downgrade the following packages:
1) libxi6 [2:1.4.1-1ubuntu2.1 (now) -> 2:1.4.1-1ubuntu2 (natty)]
Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] y
The following packages will be DOWNGRADED:
libxi6
The following NEW packages will be installed:
debhelper{a} html2text{a} libatk1.0-dev{a}
etc .......... but all installed now
sudo apt-get install gdebi-core
and you have to be root to do it otherwise it fails ........ remember to reboot too
gdebi gnome-shell-extensions-common_3.0.1-2_all.deb
gdebi gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme_3.0.0-6.6_all.deb
The themes are unpacked into a Themes folder in /.local/share/gnome-shell/

Is this how many aptitude installs >
Are you using an older or newer version of the theme selector? The one I'm using, and the one in the gNatty Pack expect the shell & themes in ~/.themes. Gnome-tweak-tool uses that same directory for metacity themes as well.
Sounds like things are going smoothly on your end.

Yep going well again .... took a long time figuring it out today .....
smooth now ... wiped some more systems to cater for more versions of it .... to play with
Hi Cecil, I see you are getting a good assist here.
If you don't want to use cairo-dock you can skip that step. (Of course it's too late now)
So far we've confirmed that cairo, dockbar, AWN, and xfce4-panel will all work with gnome 3.0.
IIRC AWN & xfce4-panel are pre- installed in gNatty, but only AWN in Natty Gnome.
