W00t? This has nothing to do with your compilation but everything with Ubuntu pushing buggy packages again.

Anyway, from messing around, problem seems to be
    GLX extension missing on 0:0

(and there is no aptitude on the liveCD - using apt-get)

Interesting afternoon. Following a lead a few pages back, I did a clean install using the minimal.iso, used the admin/expert mode and just did the skinniest base system install I could. Then added the UGR PPA's and installed about 550MB of dependant packages. Using the Radeon driver, I now have a Gnome 3 shell that runs perfectly! Try the ATI/fglrx driver and it turns to soup again...ho hum. Still, the point is, ATI graphics card + Gnome 3 = happy!

Not sure why I couldn't get (g)Natty 64 to work like this tho'.

Redsandro, that's no good. I don't use wifi here so I don't even know where to look. When 23dornot23d pops back in maybe he's encountered that and can offer a suggestion

As soon as you get to the menu .......

    Just do Ctrl + Alt + F1

    in the terminal type

    sudo apt-get remove kdm

choose gdm when it asks you to .....

The Network manager should still be running .... as before ..... kdm is not a faulty
package ...... as far as I know .......

Man, that's terrific. I was beginning to wonder if it was going to work for you. As for the drivers, I think there might be some minor differences between the 32 & 64-bit drivers. Personally I think my 32-bit setup is faster, it definitely has a much smaller memory footprint, by nearly 300Mb.

Hmm only on empty keyring password, so now it works with some bs pass in there. Anyway changing the display manager does not work, I keep getting:

Xlib: "Extension GLX missing on display 0:0"

    -edit-

Ok, you must have made some affect when you tried to setup your wifi. That's a prompt for the gnome keyring, that usually doesn't occur unless you autologin or set your account to not ask for a password.

    I'll try to slow down.

Awww damn Gnome3 failed to load on my current laptop due to, according to the popup, bad hardware (Thinkpad Edge with Intel HD graphics). Back to Compiz.
Compiz works but maybe Mutter does not with my video card out of the box. Dunno. The installed system is 10.04 maybe there's a change in drivers. Can't say. No restricted drivers, intel doesn't have any.
How did you load Gnome 3 by the way ?

are you on 10.04 and have you done some sort of upgrade ...... on that ....

    Re: gNatty Gnome Live ISO

Noo, noo, 10.04/Compiz is my OS. I am not touching that. Gnome 3 is from the liveCD 11.04 torrent in the first post I downloaded. Wanted to see how it performs on this laptop but no way I am gonna replace my main OS at this stage!

However I've fiddled around too long with this I still haven't finished my work for today. Damn me and my curiosity.

    Keep up the good work!
