Ubuntu Unresponsive after upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04

Hello, everyone. I have a really strange problem after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04:

Switching between windows has a noticeable delay.

This is true whether I'm going between two terminals, two tabs in a browser, between tabs in my chat client, or between applications entirely. It's about a 1-second delay, when previously it was an instantaneous (or nearly so) action.

It's extremely frustrating!! Any help would be appreciated. I am using gnome, not unity.

Try running top while working on the machine to see if anything is causing a big processor load.

I've been monitoring the system pretty closely and nothing is out of the ordinary. In fact load seems down quite a bit since upgrading. I wonder if it's compiz related. I'll try using metacity instead and see if it's better.
