Nope. This is a fresh install as of today.
I think the driver just isn't installed, but I can't get it to compile (see original post).

Please go to ubuntu software center go to edit-->software sources then make sure all are ticked see pics then close out of software sources amd ubutnu software center then open you terminal and do a

sudo apt-get update

then

sudo apt-get upgrade

then

sudo reboot

after reboot please show us

Once you have build-essential and linux-headers-generic installed, go to post #24 in the thread josephmills referred you to above. I referred to a 64-bit patch which was omitted. You evidently require it, so download and install it.

Post back any errors. Warnings are OK.

Ok, soooo, if I decide to go for 11.04 from 10.10 I've got to do whatwherenow to get my wireless going on my CQ56?? Are you serious? Am I stuck on 10.10 forever then without taking a degree in ubuntulygook?

It's laid out for you step by step; you can download the files and copy and paste the commands. The 5390 is a pretty new device; you only need stick with 10.10 until you want to copy and paste the commands or until the 5390 is natively supported; when that will be I haven't a clue.

Yours is a common complaint; everyone wants an item that was introduced a few weeks ago to be natively supported, that is, out of the box, right now. The complaint extends beyond wireless devices to webcams, printers (especially multi-function devices), tablets, etc., etc.

Linux always runs just a bit behind; devices without any Linux support are being introduced almost daily. I wish I could tell you Linux (or any operating system) is perfect. It isn't.

Ok guys I understand, I really do appreciate the fact that the problem was resolved by you experts and am very glad there are people like you out there working with us less experienced. I think it's partly that I would like to be able to shout from the rooftops that Ubuntu is THE best system in the world but I hesitate after every update to recommend it to people as I expect them then to be calling me looking for support (as they do for another well known and much disliked OS..). I hope you saw at least some of the humour in my last post and I will be referring to these steps again real soon thanks again.

i have this exact same problem someone plz let me know what the final solution is plus do i need to delete something ???? i also got drivers from http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php?s=2 i downloaded the second from the top in the list and have them in a folder sitting on my ubuntu desktop what now ??? i havent done anymore than this
