    acer_fancontrol fix (Ubuntu 11.04 +)

This is my first post on this forum .

After studying some time I managed to fix the acer_fancontrol script. Now it works with Ubuntu 11.04.

It was tested on an Acer Aspire 5315 with 2 GB of RAM. This script should fix the problems with the overheating of the CPU.

You have attached the modified version of acer_fancontrol.

    Here is the readme:

    1) Download the script

    2) Change the directory

    Code:
    cd Downloads
    3) Unpack the script

    Code:
    tar xvfz acer_fancontrol.tar.gz
    4) Change the directory

    Code:
    cd acer_fancontrol
    5) Pick the memory size which matches your memory size(it doesn't matter if the model isn't the same).

    Code:
    gedit acer_fancontrol
You can use other text editors too.

    The options are:

    - 512 MB : delete the # from the beginning of the 77th line
    - 1 GB : delete the # from the beginning of the 79th line
    - 2 GB : delete the # from the beginning of the 81st line

    6) Install the script

    Code:
    sudo cp acer_fancontrol /usr/bin
    sudo cp mempat /usr/bin
    7) Make it run automatically

    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/rc.local
Insert "acer_fancontrol" before the final "exit 0" (without quotes).

I mention that I don't own this script. I've just edited it a little.

Hey, I'm a little confused. After downloading the script and then attempting to install via the terminal, I'm told "no such file or directory". A little help?

    Re: acer_fancontrol fix (Ubuntu 11.04)

I'm bumping this thread. No why? In the middle of attempting to post my first bump/reply, my Acer 5315 shut down on me. The stupid thing is as hot as an oven- the fan simply isn't kicking on (as usual).

Now I asked nicely for a reply yet nobody wanted to help. I posted an entire thread about this issue and yet nobody could answer me.

Right here in this thread the solution to my Acer shut down awaits- but yet nobody can help me out by explaining just why when I type into the terminal the install commands as listed above, that I'm told there is no such file or directory. I unpacked the download. I followed the instructions. PLEASE, what am I doing wrong???

My system is about to shut down again so I'll leave it at this.

Thanks for this! I thought I'd have to stick with 10.04 on my Acer.

For the record, the script works on an Acer Aspire 5315 with 512MB RAM.

    Re: acer_fancontrol fix (Ubuntu 11.04)

I am super new to Ubuntu.

Where do I define the memory size?

When I use vim acer_fanctonrol it opens up a new terminal that appears to be some sort of text editor am I supposed to paste in the scripts from the fan control file or should this open the fancontrol file from that download?

Sorry if a lot of these questions are super newbish but I can't even experiment with the OS until I can get the laptop to stay on for more then 15 minutes.

Any info on modifying scripts or anything along those lines would be helpful. Fortunately it isn't my only computer so time isn't that big of an issue.

    Hi,

Does anyone know the value to use with 4gb of RAM?

    Cheers

Sorry guys for this late answer... I've had some problems and I haven't been able to help you.

So, I've uploaded the archive again( there were some little mistakes) and I've edited the readme so that everyone can understand it now . If you'll have more questions, please post them here.

@Schteph: Try with the 2 GB code.

What if I have one and a half (1.5) GB RAM?

Upgrading the BIOS from v.1.19 to v.1.43 has solved the fan control problem .
