I think that what people from Gnome is forgetting is that thanks to Ubuntu A LOT of people, that never before used Linux for the desktop, were willing to give a try, and many stayed because they liked the Ubuntu/Gnome desktop.
Now with this HUGE paradigm change in desktop, it's natural to have critisism, human beings are against changes, specially if they make them waste time searching for stuff they took for granted for so long, finding they daily basis programs, application menu,or opened applications or desktop notifications.
I'm not saying that Gnome should obey Ubuntu, nor viceversa, but they should work together for a better desktop, IMO.

    Unity is horrible...

I hope that, if they do abandon GNOME, at least someone will keep a parallel distribution called "Gubuntu" or something, for those who want to stick to this last (much simpler and better) desktop environment.
If they don't, I'll have to be the one to, for the first time in 6 years, abandon Ubuntu and look for another distro that uses GNOME.

The Unity bar on the left is a lot like a combination of the Start Menu and the Mac dock. It has a search feature for applications and files. And it has my main applications, the applications folder, and the trash bin. But I also hate the Mac dock, but I think the Unity bar is slightly better because of where it's placed on the left side of the screen instead of on the bottom on a Mac. Yeah I know I can customize the placement of the Mac dock.

I still hate having this dock. Yeah, sure it has easy access to my main applications. But after I've opened them what is the point of having the dock there. It seems like it's trying to be like a Mac and become super user-friendly. Macs are for the technologically retarded, installing applications by drag and drop.

The auto hide feature is damn annoying; every time I hover over there, it pops out.

When I right-click the applications folder/button, it brings up the types of applications I have. Now if I go under All Applications and then Installed, it brings up a the whole damn list. No, not even a list, a huge thumbnail gallery of all my applications. Maybe, I'll look through there to see what I have but I'm not going to use that often. And if I go through a category of applications, like Office, I have to go in a click the thing just to see what I have. I can't just breeze through it like in Gnome with the lists. Improvements need to be made here.

There lacks a bar for the current opened windows. And being an Ubuntu user, I think we all have lots of windows open. Using alt-tab is hard to manage for many open windows. There needs to be a bar for current opened windows.

The Unity interface has a lot of new shortcut keys, like SUPER-D to hide all windows, instead of clicking the Show Desktop button on the bottom left of Gnome. And I understand that using shortcut keys is faster than moving the mouse and clicking. They are trying to get users to use more shortcut keys, but it's weird that they put in this Unity bar to make things more graphical.

The new search feature is extremely useful for accessing applications quickly. It is similar to the Start Menu search on Windows and the Spotlight search on Mac.

I know Ubuntu is suppose to be fully customizable, but where the hell are the options/preferences for the Unity bar.

Unity sucks right now, and a lot of improvements need to be made.
Unity in 3D has the dock. The Classic version doesn't have the dock. There is no Google Gadgets in Classic or 3D Unity. I like Google Gadgets.

Don't like the Unity 3D. I boot with Windows 7 and Unity. I chose the Classic desktop with Awn. It is a cool docking program in the Ubuntu Software Center that works.

Was very happy with Unity in a dual boot with Windows 7. However, Windows 7 froze all the time in sleep mode. The same thing did not happen in Unity. Very strange anomaly.

Unity is solid. I would just scrap Windows 7 in this Asus and go with Unity but this computer is brand new. The Asus has 16 GBS of RAM, DVD/Blu-Ray burner and 1.5 GBS VRAM. It ain't compatible with Unity or The motherboard is troublesome. Never had a problem with dual booting with Ubuntu this and that since Hardy Heron and Windows XP onward.

Unity can play Blu-Ray data discs. I burned a disc in Windows and found it played in Unity. Was much surprised. You can not burn a Blu-Ray data disc with Brasero at the present time. Fluendo DVD sparkles with Unity.

Have had problems with graphic cards being enabled in Ubuntu this and that in the past. Am shy to enable the graphics card.

Unity is flawless, everything native works famously.

I'm impressed of how Mark Shutterworld is so stubborn with Unity, not to mention how buggy Natty turned out to be (even without Unity) I'm having computer hang at two different machine, that with the very hardware, never before in three years had that problem, using the current ubuntu available. Try Natty, Ubuntu classic, with two monitor, and good luck with the window's decoration and desktop fully repaint when changing workspaces.
Me too, after 6 years of Ubuntu, I'm looking to other distros.
