    Unity interface sucks

I hate the Unity interface, but I can see where it's trying to get to.

The Unity bar on the left is a lot like a combination of the Start Menu and the Mac dock. It has a search feature for applications and files. And it has my main applications, the applications folder, and the trash bin. But I also hate the Mac dock, but I think the Unity bar is slightly better because of where it's placed on the left side of the screen instead of on the bottom on a Mac. Yeah I know I can customize the placement of the Mac dock.

I still hate having this dock. Yeah, sure it has easy access to my main applications. But after I've opened them what is the point of having the dock there. It seems like it's trying to be like a Mac and become super user-friendly. Macs are for the technologically retarded, installing applications by drag and drop.

The auto hide feature is damn annoying; every time I hover over there, it pops out.

When I right-click the applications folder/button, it brings up the types of applications I have. Now if I go under All Applications and then Installed, it brings up a the whole damn list. No, not even a list, a huge thumbnail gallery of all my applications. Maybe, I'll look through there to see what I have but I'm not going to use that often. And if I go through a category of applications, like Office, I have to go in a click the thing just to see what I have. I can't just breeze through it like in Gnome with the lists. Improvements need to be made here.

There lacks a bar for the current opened windows. And being an Ubuntu user, I think we all have lots of windows open. Using alt-tab is hard to manage for many open windows. There needs to be a bar for current opened windows.

The Unity interface has a lot of new shortcut keys, like SUPER-D to hide all windows, instead of clicking the Show Desktop button on the bottom left of Gnome. And I understand that using shortcut keys is faster than moving the mouse and clicking. They are trying to get users to use more shortcut keys, but it's weird that they put in this Unity bar to make things more graphical.

The new search feature is extremely useful for accessing applications quickly. It is similar to the Start Menu search on Windows and the Spotlight search on Mac.

I know Ubuntu is suppose to be fully customizable, but where the hell are the options/preferences for the Unity bar.

Unity sucks right now, and a lot of improvements need to be made.

Set the unhide edge to the top-left corner instead; in fact, I think it takes too much mouse pushing to get the launcher to unhide when you have it set to the left edge for unhiding.

Some are in Compizconfig Settings Manager (like the unhide edge/corner).
I hope my advice helps. Please let me know whether it did!

Shouldn't the config options be built in with the system?

And also the metacity config is missing.

they didn't get the time to do it. only so many things you can do in 6 months, unlike years that other OSs take.

    anyway, is coming soon.

    Re: Unity interface sucks

Just about everything on the Unity interface is configurable. The main problem is that it is not in one place. A lot of (most of) the settings are actually based in the Compiz settings manager, while the launcher itself is not properly configurable.

Then one might also get conflicts with other packages like exo-utils, etc... In the end it took me quite a while to get everything set up, but the final setup is better than what it was with the gnome interface.

Another problem might also be because the default settings are very basic and in some cases will not suit the user. For example:
    - Do you want to use the "Desktop wall" vs the "Desktop Cube"?
    - Do you want to use 3D effects vs 2D?
    - Do you want the application switcher to switch between all applications, or only those on the current workspace?
    - Do you want to access a specific terminal from any workspace? (I have a terminal window (Eterm) open on each workspace for different purposes)
    - Do you want to add your own items to the launcher?
    - Do you want to change the size of the launcher?

I see many users complain about all of these things, but everything CAN be set to your personal preferences...

    Re: Unity interface sucks

So many efforts to leave unity usable. I don't like it, you said here

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1745791

that Unity was designed by "specialist designers"
, so did Windows Vista, and look how that ended up. People make mistakes, we are humans, Unity is a mistake for desktop users, deal with it, and don't look stubborn by not listening at all at users.
Why don't you make a poll about it the acceptance, I work in development, me and 3 co-workers, went back to ubuntu classic on Natty.

I don't see what was wrong with Vista that's not wrong with Windows 7 or Windows XP, apart from the low performance on laptops. However, I think the laptop performance is a trait of Windows, as I've seen XP laptops running sluggishly too.

    Re: Unity interface sucks

When this thread become a windows discussion? I was just putting some example that just because "experts" design or build or conduct something, does not mean it's going to be a success.
Unity was thought for other kind of devices, not for using on a daily basis with a mouse and a full pc keyboard.
According to some reading, the main reason for the change, is that Gnome project dropped support for gnome 2, then soon they would not have other choice but to go with gnome 3 or something else, and Ubuntu choose Unity just to deliver something new, which it's not better.

What do you prefer about Gnome 3 over Unity?
