    why 3.6GB instead of 4GB

Just installed ubuntu 11.04 64bit version on my laptop. System monitor shows only 3.6GB memory instead of 4GB. Any thoughts on that?

    AMD Turion II P540 Dual-Core

    Thanks.

Re: why 3.6GB instead of 4GB

I had this happen on my previous laptop. Thing is my motherboard was physically unable to access more than 4 GB of memory, and once you factor in the other little components on the motheboard, mainly the video card(but also may other things I would imagine), then I only got about 3.2GB.

Do you have a dedicated graphics card, like nvidia or ati/amd?

EDIT: You might want to check the bios to see what it reports for how much memory your computer has.

try to post your internal hardware too next time. It save some googling time for the people trying to answer your question. Sometimes there may be minor differences between models of computers

Your computer has integrated graphics which means it reserve some space for it. That is why you are not seeing the full 4 gb.
