    Hi!, MAFoElffen,
Re your Patches, last option, You Posted:
    C. The additional optional fix is below. I can't verify a few things in it. If the 2 above fails... then at least here's something else to try.
    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s...dpost&p=525285
    Code:
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.44-pkg2.run -x
That will dump the driver into a directory like: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.44-pkg2
go to /usr/src/nv subdirectory inside NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.44-pkg2
Open nv.c in a text editor such as Gedit or VIM, locate all instances of "owner" and comment the line out
In the 290.10 version of the Nvidia driver bin file, the setup is different, there is no '/usr/src/nv' path.
Instead there is a 'Kernel' folder, and the 'nv.c' file is in that. Edit: As described in option B2.
    Using
    Code:
     gksu nautilus
will allow me to edit the file as you suggest.

But I do not know how to re-compress the folder - if that is necessary.
Neither 'Linux for Dummies' nor 'LINUX The Complete Manual' is any help.
    Code:
     man tar
    does not help much. Would:
    Code:
     tar -cf archivename.tar foldername
    be the command to use??

    Hopefully, bogan.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

After testing some tarring out, your command

    tar -cf blah.tar foldername

will do what you wish. A few notes: use ./foldername, and use the flags -cvf instead of -cf to see some pretty and reassuring output. If you want you could also compress it, perhaps by calling it blah.lzma (or blah.tar.lzma, not sure).

I can't speak for the rest of the instructions, just some drive-by help here. Also you write that you use tar man; isn't it man tar? Random tip, pipe man tar to less using man tar | less, makes man pages easier to read.

This thread evolved into the the graphics catchall. Even though, when something thought to be, turn out not to be graphics related, well it still gets taken care of here.

Okay- Nvidia GeForce 7600 graphics, Intel CPU, ...

    Some preparatory questions:
    - How much memory? 1GB or above right?
    - New/fresh install of 11.10?
    - You say if get to the Grub Menu, then continues to where?
    - Does it have any messages before it breaks?
You said "missing kernel," which is sometimes a Grub Message where it can't find the linux kernel... Or XServer when it can't find the kernel driver (such as nvidia.so).
-Does it boot into a desktop if you use these instructions and use nomodeset instead of xforcevesa
Temporarily Editing Grub Menu for Boot Options

    - Does it boot into a desktop if you use these instructions and use nomodset to use "Try" on the 11.10 LiveCD:
    Modesetting and the LiveCD

    - If you select a recovery menu item from the grub menu, does the recovery menu come up?
    - If it comes up, if you then select "resume", does it boot the desktop in low-graphics failsafe mode?

I could go on, but that's a good start.
    4GB RAM
    Fresh install of 11.10
Now I can't get the grub menu, it hangs at GRUB Loading...
No messages before that, just blurred screen for a second and then all blank

Tried 'xforcevesa' in the boot options, downloaded the Boot Repair utility, and it at least shows some love now, I'm finally into Ubuntu graphical interface

I installed the "additional drivers", and tried modprobing them, sudo modprobe nvidia-current and sudo modprobe-nvidia, and it says "Error inserting...no such device" error message

Hi! Zakamutt, Thanks for your help. You Posted:

I assume the ' ./foldername ' means to be cd'd to the folder in which the target folder is placed, and the './ ' means ' Look in the current directory '.
I am a bit puzzled by your second sentence, as the whole idea is to compress the folder back to the state it was in originally before editing it.

I installed the "additional drivers", and tried modprobing them, sudo modprobe nvidia-current and sudo modprobe-nvidia, and it says "Error inserting...no such device" error message
That's because nvidia-current is the package... nvidia is the module.
    Code:

    sudo echo RUN+="/sbin/modprobe nvidia" > /etc/udev/rules.d/90-modprobe.rules
    sudo echo options nouveau modeset=0 > /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-kms.conf
    sudo update-initramfs -u
That creates a file in udev to load the nvidia module via udev (earlier than modprobe), turns off and prevents nouveau from loading when modprobe.d loads (same method used by the nvidia binary driver installer) and adds it to the initial boot ram disk.

Yes... and about recompressing... I and all those others referenced executed the uncompressed code. We didn't re-compress it. After the edits, You don't run the original .run file, you change to the extraction directory, chroot the nvidia-installer file (to executable) and run it.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

I Ran Update Manager, Now I get a Blank Screen

Does that seem all too familiar? If so read on...

Sometimes a kernel change can cause problems with packages that where installed/compiled against an earlier kernel. Graphics Drivers seem to be real sensitive to this. Usually uninstalling the driver package, then (re)installing them... lets them recompile against the newer kernel. Older kernels will still work with them as the newer kernel usually has new capabilities in them, but still has regression (or backward compatibility) built in.

Always try to remove drivers before reinstalling. If you don't add that step in, it either says you already have the current package or some people end up with both old and new pieces of a driver that conflict with each other or don't work together.

// Draft document on reading Xorg Logs //

    Deciphering The Xorg Log File.

Ever wonder why I ask for Xorg Log files on this thread and in the Forum? Why would anyone want to read /var/log/Xorg.0.log and be able to understand it? Self-torture or a tool?

If there is something wrong graphically or you want do something with the XSession., all the information is there.

    Example file:
    Code:

Here it shows if valid EDID data is return by a display or TV and what ports they are found on. There will also be refresh rates. This is a little cryptic for some. What is a problem here is if there is no EDID data returned. Without that you have to declared a refresh range if it is different than what is normal and may have to declare custom modelines.

I have to stop for now.

    To Do List:
    - show EDID Data in the xorg log and how to test it as valid, convert that to a local edid.bin file
    - show modelines computed by VESA
    - show a log without a driver or config and failures.
    - etc. (blah/tired)
