So then we have to create in by manually poling the resolution data externally thorugh utility to add i.t ! line per resolution. to the xorg.conf.
    [conf]

I looked at your xrandr output, your varions corh.conf file posts, your xorg.x.logs... Since you can't get any kind of EDID data from that monitor, I created all that monitors modeline data and added it to wgat your xorg.conf "should" be:

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

No MAFoElffen I only have the one graphics card, and dont run bumblebee.
I can get the driver for nvidia in fine, as you can see, but when I boot my desktop has the unity sidebar and top bar, but the desktop is white, with no desktop image. When I shut down, and unity dissapears, I then see the desktop. Its as if its running behind the unity bars.
It does work in 2D mode on the natural open source drivers when I install ubuntu and do nothing else though.
    Grrrr.
Thanks for helping me with this!!

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

Once again, MAFoElffen thank you ofr your help.

I modified my xorg.conf (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) as you indicated.

When I access Applications --> Settings --> Display I am still running at 640x480 with only other option is 320x240.

When I access Applications --> Settings --> NVIDIA X Server Settings Under the "X Server Display Configuration" it says:
Unable to load X Server Display Configuration page:
    Failed to parse mode '640x480 60.00 @640x480 +0+0'
    on screen 0 )on GPU-0)
    from metamode"
    'CRT-0: 640x480 60.00 @640x480 +0+0'

When I access Applications --> System --> Additional Drivers There are three instances of "NVIDIA binary Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library" to choose from. None of the three appear to be any different from the other two. And in this screen, Jockey is saying the "This driver is not active." And I have the choice to activate it with the "activate" button. Should I 'activate' one of these? And if so, does chosing the first second or third instance make a difference?

You are using your Nvidia GwForce 7000m / nForce 610m with what "was" the latest driver v280.13... NVidia has some open confirmed bugs with this diver having problems displaying Unity in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu launchpad has open bugs with this also. https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/753144
The work-around from launchpad for this, asks people to roll back their driver to the older nvidia-173 series... But you said that didn't work for you: Of course, that is a temporary work-around, not a fix.

NVidia has this to say about it:
    Hello all,
Thanks for reporting this bug. Since it seems to be quite active on launchpad and users are writing in to linux-bugs about it, I just wanted to mention that NVIDIA is aware of the issue. We've been tracking it for a while under NVIDIA internal bug number 822418. It does appear to be specific to older cards in low video memory situations; for integrated GPUs you can allocate more memory to work around the problem, but for discrete GPUs this isn't a possibility.
We do not currently have an estimated time for delivery of a fix.
The newest driver was just released: 285.0509... maybe you could try that one? Otherwise? Ensure that other drivers are gone before installing.

Please post your xorg.conf... sounds like there is a conflicting metamode declaration in there somewhere.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

What are my chances? After an upgrade to 11.04 I have a blank screen. I've spent the better part of a day chasing it and getting more blanks. Largely failing to see or update Grub so I can solve it. Previous distro worked well. I think it's because of my ATI Radeon HD4650 graphics card. Since I have no great graphics requirements, does it make sense to switch to a $35.Nvidia GeForce 8400 as my easiest way out? Or do I end up with a blank screen anyway and a lighter wallet?

First- What have you tried so far?

What kind of Blank screen do you have when?

Is Ubuntu the only OS on that box?

How are you trying to bring up the grub menu?

That NVideo card is cheap and will work... maybe with the same effort of getting your Radeon card going.
(Hint- the old fglx drivers leave resident modules that conflict with the newer drivers... but newest from ATI is broke for Ubuntu and Untiy...) No other hints until I get some info to see where you're at and what it would take to get you going.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

On booting after updating Linux to 11.04,after the bios and grub messages I get a quick reddish 11.04 screen, then nada. Using shift or esc at the Grub message, doesn't show Grub. I tried to comment out the Hidden Grub in Gedit, but I couldn't Grub-update after the edit, so it didn't help. There is only Linux on the computer.
