Also post your /var/log/xorg.1.log. It keeps xorg.n.log's from 0 to 5... 1t should be one back, where it was trying to start the graphics with that driver and show where it erred out.
How do I boot in rescue mode? Because all I have is a black screen, the only thing I can think of is to log in using the install cd. Is there an easier way?

if it is the only OS on your PC, press the <shift> key intermittently as it boots > the Grub menu should dislpay when it gets to that point. At the Grub menu, arrow down one to the second boot item, which should say something like Ubuntu, 2.6.38.8, Rescue... Pick that option.

It will boot to a VGA kind of screen with a box menu, where one option will be boot in safe / low graphics mode, select that option.

if that doesn't work, look at post number 3, boot from a LiveCD. Mount the hard disk that your install is located, figure out how many attempted boots back you have to go to to get the correct xorg.n.log file that has the driver error in it.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

I couldn't get rescue mode to work, so I am using the livecd. Here is xorg.conf:

    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Default Device"
    Option "NoLogo" "True"
    EndSection
Here is Xorg.0.log (there was no Xorg.1.log)

Your xorg.conf is not the one it was using, as that one would be invalid (not enough info) to point it to an Nvidia driver as it shows being loaded in the xorg.0.log... although the xorg.conf info doesn't show up in the xorg.0.log as it should also.

What your log says is that your monitor is not returning the EDID data back to your video card, so that the card cannot figure out what resolutions it is capable of displaying. Becuase of that, the nvidia driver's nvidia-auto-select mode to be able to work...The driver tried to compensate by setting a mode of 1024x768.

Check post 280 and look for the blacklist file. Make sure your blacklist file matches. Then, If using the LiveCD, follow then instructions in post 3, the second half, and mount the sys of your install... Up through the instructions at step 4. Instead of step 5 in that post, do this
    Code:
    sudo nvidia-xconfig
That will generate a new, clean xorg.conf file. If rebooting doesn;t comeup right, edit your xorg.conf file, extract which will look similar to"
    Code:
    Section "Screen"
      Identifier "Screen0"
      Device "Card0"
      Monitor "Monitor0"
      DefaultDepth 24

      EndSubSection
    EndSection

    EndSection
Since your monitor is not returning data back... Look at the lines highlighted in red above, you may have to add those lines to the appropriate sections of your xorg.conf file to tell the driver what to use as data, manually.

sigh, still didn't work. I tried editing xorg.conf by adding the red lines in your last post. After reboot, still the black screen. Here is my new xorg.conf file:

One sidenote- when posting logs, please use the " # " icon of the forum posting bar and paste the text within the CODE tags... It will [ut the text into a text box with scroll bars and make the post shorter and leave it easier to review.

Yes, there is something still going on deeper. Please post your /var/log/syslog. Maybe it might show something else going on. How much memory does this PC have? What is the monitor brand and model? Does it have a "manufactured date" on it's tag? What resolutions did this monitor display in the past?

Can you boot from a LiveCD and run this?
    Code:
    xrandr -q
I'm thinking it may be mis-allocating video memory during it's graphics boot or it may need to generate a separate EDID binary file to use for data for the monitor...

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

    Hi MAFoElffen.

Thanks again. Since we last spoke I tried messing around with the various options for the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX-DEFUALT='quiet splash' in my grub file. I tried adding nomodeset which was suggested in the following post:
http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2010/05/...up-workaround/but that did not help. My monitor is a LG FLATRON W1934S. It was manufactured Feb 2008. I can't remember what resolutions it ran in the past I believe I have 8Gb of ram.

P.S. thanks for explaining that trick with pasting text, I was wondering how to do that. By the way, considering that my computer and monitor booted fine before I installed the nvidia driver from system->administration->additional drivers, could the problem be there? I read in other threads that people were having success by downloading the nvidia driver from the nvidia site. I tried that the other day with ubuntu 10.04, but the steps necessary to install it required so many workarounds, and they ended up not working for me. I never succeeded in installing the driver and gave up. That's when I tried a clean install of 11.04 and joined the current thread.

In any case, here is the output from xrandr -q:

    Code:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
    DVI-I-1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm

      800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
      640x480 72.8 75.0 66.7 60.0
      720x400 70.1
My syslog file is so long it wont post. Is there a sub portion I should look for? I have restarted my computer maybe 25 times since the fresh install, and the syslog file appears to hold logs for all of those times.

    Code:

My syslog file is so long it wont post. Is there a sub portion I should look for? I have restarted my computer maybe 25 times since the fresh install, and the syslog file appears to hold logs for all of those times.
On the /etc/default/grub... GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX-DEFUALT= ... Try adding vmalloc=192MB After editing, save and rerun update-grub.

Do you have 2 monitors connected via VGA-1 and DVI-I-1? Your xorg.conf isn't showing that. Conflict? Have you tried disconnecting either and trying?

Look at Post #280 and try that...

I have to go train 2 horses. Will finish reading your syslog when I get back.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

    Hi MaFoElffen,

I only have one monitor and it is connected to the VGA port. Is it possible that video output is being misdirected to the dvi port?

P.S. I tried the vmalloc thing, but it didn't help.

Also, I tried following the steps in post 280. The difficulty is that I can only get in the system through the livecd.
When I get to step 8, I get a warning that nvidia is skipping the runlevel check because the utility 'runlevel' failed to run. I select the option to procede. I then get an error that nouveau is running. The problem is that I am running off of the live cd and doing everything from a terminal using Applications->Accessories->Terminal. To access files I follow the steps I found from the link http://www.robertbeal.com/562/rebuil...ubuntu-live-cd. I am not in a text only environment. There is the usual ubuntu background etc... I tried editing /etc/default/grub to add GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD=text as suggested in post 2, but no matter what, without the live cd, all I ever get is a black screen.
