    Hi!, miraalc,

You would do better to open your own thread with an informative title in the 'Absolute Beginners' forum, or the specialist 'wubi' thread, explaining under what conditions you get those messages.

Do not forget to include the version of Ubuntu, if a direct install or via wubi, and your video card details and driver.
Plus can you boot from a LiveCd/USB?

    Chao!, bogan.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

I don't know if I should step in here, but after installing an upgrade (11.10) I can't load, even from an ISO, I have no keyboard control, just a black screen. Video I well I get the Acer logo and the American Megatrends Logo in the upper left of the screen and then hibernation. I see no indication that I ever get to the Grub screen. Ctrl/ALT/F1 etc...has no effect.

System is a year old, consists of an ECS IC780M-A Motherboard-AMD 770, amd Phenom X4 9750 quad core processor, Patroit psd22g80028,

The RAM was replaced just before the upgrade, memory tests showd that the memory was failing.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

Hi, I did a post on this in the Ubuntu Studio forum but so far have not had a single response and hopefully someone can here offer some help....

I did a clean install of Ubuntu Studio 12.04 on Dell Dimension with a nVidia GForce 7300 LE card and did an upgrade of the nVidia driver as well.

Everything is fine - I get the grub menu ( I set the gfx_mode to 1280x1024x24 for my monitor) and when I select the boot entry I get a totally black screen and after a few seconds get presented with the logon screen. Essentially the problem is not having the Plymouth screen. When I logout I get the Plymouth screen.

Any suggestions on how to get the Plymouth screen at boot? Many thanks.

SOLVED by using rayraven's suggestion in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9175501 - thanks rayraven!

What's this "Rescue mode/low graphics?" I find Recovery mode and failsafe graphics mode. Are these equivalent?

help Compaq Presario F500 / Blank Screen after install and first boot

I've got a Compaq Presario F500 with nVidia graphics, that worked with Ubuntu 12.04 (trying out from USB without installing). After installing, from first boot thereafter, I've only been able to make it to the login screen. I type my password and get a black screen for several minutes, then an empty ubuntu themed wallpaper comes up without any buttons or icons, and only a mouse pointer that moves around. I can get to the ctrl-alt f1-f6 consoles to type commands, but that's it.

This laptop loaded prior versions of Xubuntu and Ubuntu without problem. I recall seeing an error message calling out compiz. Do you think that some updated video driver installed that prevents the GUI from loading, especially since I had elected to add updates automatically during the installation?

Thanks for any bash commands to uninstall and reinstall the the default graphics driver (to use the one that the USB version of 12.04 uses), if you think that might be the culprit.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

    Hi!, markMDW,

Have you tried booting to recovery, or logging-in to a different display ? ubuntu 2D or gnome?

Or to a different account ? Guest ??

What video card do you have ? Integrated graphics ??

    Please Post:
    Code:
     lspci | grep -iA2 VGA
sudo lshw | grep -iA12 display
    sudo apt-cache policy nvidia-current
    cat /sys/module/nvidia/version
    Chao!, bogan.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

The nVidia video is integrated into the laptop. I tried recovery FailsafeX Graphics mode to no avail; it immediately returns: "server terminated with error(1). Closing log file"

loging in as Guest also resulted in the graphics locking up (no buttons or widgets, just a mouse cursor to move around)

This installation has never successfully booted up the desktop GUI under any login. I've only been able to run the bash shell from console, but I'm very limited in what I know how to do there.

    bogon, thanks for investigating

    Hi!, markMDW,

    You Posted:
Thanks for any bash commands to uninstall and reinstall the the default graphics driver
There Is no way to do that without the info asked for in my previous Post.

Do you need added instructions to run those commands and Post the results?

    You also Posted:
This installation has never successfully booted up the desktop GUI under any login. I've only been able to run the bash shell from console,
What commands , if any, have you tried? with what results?

When you press 'Crtl+Alt+F1' and log-in, what messages do you get if you enter:
    Code:
    sudo service lightdm stop
    sudo service lightdm start
[ In ubuntu talk we call that "console" a 'tty', or 'Text Terminal'].

Please describe exactly what you see when you boot-up.

Do you get a Grub Menu or or a Grub Rescue prompt, which limits what you can do?

Finally, Can you boot correctly from a LiveCD/USB ??, to a GUI, log-in and get a ubuntu screen?

    Chao!, bogan.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

bogan, the laptop has a dualboot with xubuntu 10.04 that works flawlessly. It uses the "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver [recommended]" for a "GeForce Go 6100 256mb" graphics processor

the only command I've run is
    sudo apt-get update

the graphics are either a blank black screen with a movable mouse cursor or a blank purple with fuzzy/hazzy glowing light [ubuntu wallpaper] screen with a movable mouse cursor. there are no buttons or widgets to click

    I tried
    sudo service lightdm stop
    sudo service lightdm start
    and get the same results

    ----edit added below------------------------------
I get a grub menu and have tried the recovery mode with FailsafeX Graphics; the same thing happens.

When I first boot up I make it to the login gui (the graphics work perfectly here) I select my login and enter the password; at this point if I don't have my network cable plugged in I do get a graphics popup saying the network is disconnected, and then the popup goes away) it then takes several minutes before I realize nothing is going to happen. I get the ubuntu wallpaper theme (purple haze and light) with a moveable mouse cursor. I click around just in case there is an invisible button to click on, but nothing happens.

Since the older versions of Ubuntu and Xubuntu have all worked on this laptop I figure it probably has something to do with freezing up while trying to load the "Ubuntu Shell".
    -----------------------------------------

    thanks again for investigating!
