    try activating in hardware drivers

    run the following to get compiz working:
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core

    Reinstall will be a better fix based on the roundabout problems encountered. You can configure your settings quickly because you've done that before, you know everything you need done. Don't install the new ATI drivers though.
