Question Ubuntu stops doing anything if no key has been pressed

Strange problem, Ubuntu will stop doing anything (i.e. screen will not refresh, downloads will not continue, clock will not update, searches will not continue) unless I press a key on the keyboard. What is causing the problem and how can I fix this?

I'd look at your power management options first. Turn then all off. If the problem goes away you've likely identified the source of the problem. Then play with the sleep / hibernate settings to see if you can pin down exactly which one is causing the problem.

    Still does it

It rarely happens when fully booted, mostly it happens when booting and shut down, where I'll have to hold down any key for it to boot.
