problem with game under steam

I'm running steam under wine, and all games have worked fine so far, except maybe a few jittery graphics but that was no biggie.

But I payed for and tried to run settlers 7.
Keeps saying "an internet connection is required to play this game. Failed to connect to the Ubisoft master servers. Please verify that your internet connection is functional and try again."

and I have an internet connection.
So I tried disabling guard dog temporarily, that didn't solve it, so I uninstalled it, still didn't work.

My understanding is that ubuntu has something called IPtables?
if that's right I don't know how to play around with it's settings to get this working.

steam probably won't support me cause I'm running their product under linux.

So any suggestions?

I see, well it does install, and since it's running under steam I'm hoping that so long as this connection issue is solved everything else will work.

all other games under steam work fine, they just don't have insane copyright protection so strong not even legal purchases can play.
