    What's up with network interfaces?

    Hi guys,

    Can someone please explain to me why none of the linux networking commands work for me on Linux Mint 9 (Ubuntu 10.04)?

    Code:
    $ sudo ifdown eth0
    ifdown: interface eth0 not configured
    $ sudo ifup wlan0
    Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0
    $ sudo iwlist wlan0
    iwlist: unknown command `wlan0' (check 'iwlist --help')
    All my usual networking commands fail but network is working fine.

    Code:
    $ ifconfig
    eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:16:36:2b:bf:c8
              inet addr:192.168.2.101  Bcast:192.168.2.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

    I'm not understanding why my /etc/network/interfaces file doesn't define my interfaces but the network is working

    Code:
    $ cat /etc/network/interfaces
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback
    How the heck do I manage interfaces in Ubuntu based machines (from the command line)??

    Thanks!

    Re: What's up with network interfaces?

    Ugh... so apparently users have to manually configure /etc/network/interfaces (ref: ifdown man page)

    This fixed it:

    Code:
    $ cat /etc/network/interfaces
    # The loopback network interface
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback

    # The primary network interface
    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet dhcp

    # The wireless network interface
    auto wlan0
    iface wlan0 inet dhcp

    Hi Thund3rstruck

    There's a Linux Mint forum to get help with your distro.
    You'll find it here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/
