parts of gnome panels disappear randomly

upgraded from Lucid to Maverick, panels lose pieces randomly then come back just as randomly. sometimes i have to right click on them other times they just come back after a few minutes on their own.

No idea whats wrong, would like to know if it could be related to my inability to enable desktop effects even though my driver is working fine. and if so is this a driver issue or an xorg issue or a kernel issue and how can i trouble shoot to find out and fix?

    any help would be appreciated.

    thanks in advance.

This issue has been extant in every Release I've used. To such a degree that I now know the three commands necessary to kill and reset the default panel. I'm betting heaps of others have the same problem.

You cannot invoke desktop effects?, are you using a vendor specific driver for your graphics card?

I'm using the proprietary driver fire gl for ati...fglx. It wasn't working before but now it is but no matter what I do effects won't be enabled. I even upgraded my xorg to the bleeding edge release and still nothing.

I really wanna have this fixed before Natty drops since it uses effects I can't access (like compiz)...it's frustrating because thing were fine in lucid but I wanted some thing in maverick and wanted things in natty...

I'm running natty Desktop 64bit Alpha3 and love it, 10.10 never quite worked right for me.

Yes. it is stable enough for daily usage. I've been using it for about one week now, and LOVING it.

    • I'm searching for the 64 bit [sic] Desktop torrent now, it's the fastest way I know of to download. Yes, I said 64 bit, if your computer has a 64 bit capable CPU, then use 64 bit iso. At least try it without even thinking. Lots of people post concerns about using the 64 bit version, shed your concerns, (if you have any) and simply try it. That is the fastest way to ascertain whether it will work for you or not. I did try it and it's working flawlessly so far.
    • Oh, one caveat to date, there is a glitch with flash, but fixing it just entails finding the correct java code to download and install.

OK, that's a good natty-desktop-amd64.iso torrent, go for it.
