    error: unknown filesystem

Ok guys, having a bit of a problem here. I woke up this morning, and my computer was froze. It does this from time to time, the monitor won't respond and wake up, flashing lights in the keyboard etc. Well anyways, I turned it off, then turned it back on, and it says:
    Code:
    error: unknown filesystem
    grub rescue >
I tried to reinstall the grub2 files using a live cd, and ran into somewhat of a big problem. I tried to mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/ but it kept saying
    Code:
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
I opened the disk utility to try and mount it that way, and the largest chunk of my hard drive, that which used to be "ubuntu ext4" is now "unknown".

I really need some help here guys, any would be appreciated.

    Re: error: unknown filesystem

    Hi,

    please do the following:

Boot the Ubuntu Live CD/USB. Choose the option "Try Ubuntu without any changes." Once the desktop loads come back here and do the following:

    1. Download the boot info script. There is a link in my signature.
    2. Once downloaded, move the boot info script to the desktop.
    3. Open a terminal and run the command

    Code:
    sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh
This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here in a new post. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

Try doing a disc check with partedmagic live CD/flashdrive to see if it recovers the partition.

    Hi,

you can run a file-system check from the LiveCD to see if it repairs the installation:

    Code:
    sudo e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sda1
Reboot, taking out the CD, and keep your fingers crossed.

Ok, finally got it working again. I did this twice, and also when it booted it, on the splash screen it said there were some problems with the disk, and gave me the option to press F to fix, press I to ignore, or press M to manually repair (or something). I pressed F, waited a few minutes, and it took me to my login screen. Thanks for the help man, you are a lifesaver.
