How do you make a theme?

Okay, I know you guys must be tired of all of my questions concerning Ubuntu, but I would like to know how I would go about making my own theme for it. Does anyone know where a page with some instructions are?

Start out by taking a theme you like an altering it. That'll help you get the feel for what the widgets use.

Consider which theme "engine" you want to use.

    Clearlooks,
    murrine,
    etc...

Then choose a theme that works with that engine to customize.

I took it a step further and altered the clearlooks engine to get what I wanted. A link to my customized engine is in my sig.

Does it matter which release of ubuntu you are using as far as what themes you can use on it?

For instance: If I run Natty can I use themes for 10.10 on it?

    Or distro?

For instance: If I'm running Kubuntu can I use themes for Kubuntu, etc on it?

In other words - distro to distro and release to release?

If not, how do I know what works with what?

Most of it is defined by which desktop environment is being used. Fedora on Gnome could use Ubuntu Gnome themes and Kubuntu could use OpenSUSE KDE themes, but Ubuntu can't use Kubuntu themes.

Some small things are specific to distros or versions, but the DE is the main thing.

Right on. Thankc copper. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) right now and I think it uses a different DE than the usual. It's the only thing I could get to run on this lame HP laptop. I think you can get it to run gnome though and theres one theme I really like that I know works with 10.10 (which runs gnome I think). It's called Oversword Dark.
