Skype video doesn't work -- vidcam *does* work

Does anyone have any idea of how I can troubleshoot the following issue:

I have a webcam on my machine, it works fine -- e.g., if I run "camorama" I get a very nice stream.

But when I start Skype, and then go to options and test the video device, it shows only a black square. I have had Skype work with some configurations (e.g., on my desktop with built-in webcam everything is fine) but not on this machine right now.

Any ideas of what I should look for?
