I take it you didn't read this on reddit, from the sounds of it everyone in the thread was quite excited about Unity.

Re: What the hell Ubuntu? How can you do this?

Ok so I will now have both Unity and Gnome to choose from instead of just Gnome. That's nice I guess.
But I have a few questions about Unity.
Can I disable the ugly sidebar dock and use the desktop as usual?
Can I use panels instead of that ugly file menu at the top of the screen?
    Will Compiz still work?
Will Nautilus still be the file manager?
Also, I have the panels down on the screen so do I have to get used to having the menus at the top from now on?
And when I upgrade from 10.04 to 11.04 (if I don't do a fresh installation), will that remove gnome?

anyone have pictures of this so I can see what he's talking about?
Whoever came up with the phrase "There is no such thing as a stupid question" obviously never had the internet.

You know you can use google or youtube for that, right?
    Ok go here http://digitizor.com/2010/10/26/cano...-ubuntu-11-04/

Ok so apparently I can use compiz with Unity.
Good, now back to my other questions.

If you mean 'as usual' as being using the panels, then no, might as well just use the Classic Desktop

Other than the right hand side, I don't understand how the file menu relates to the panels. If you mean you don't like the global menu aspect and instead want the menus in each window, then no you can't do that.

As Unity requires Compiz, yes. Though some settings may cause a conflict, like Unity wants to make a desktop wall, so it conflicts with desktop cube.

    Simply put, Yes

Again, I'm not sure what specific thing your'e talking about, nothing has moved from the bottom to the top (from default panel to default unity)

GNOME will not be removed regardless. Unity is still GNOME, it is simply the UI part of GNOME that is different. As such, no it won't remove GNOME, even if you did a fresh installation you'd still have GNOME.

Keep in mind the panel UI is eventually going to be discontinued by GNOME so in the long run you'll have to either use Unity, GNOME Shell, or a completely different DE (KDE, XFCE, etc).
If the only reason you think your software is better is because it's FOSS, you need to write better software

I guess I just have to wait and see whats going to happen.
I just can't understand why they have to change things that already works.
But maybe it's just me. I'm a little afraid of new things when I have learned to love the old way it worked.
EDIT: I think people should stop complaining about these new things and wait to see the results first.

Re: What the hell Ubuntu? How can you do this?

So if Gnome-shell would be released until the release of 11.04 it would install too?

In my opinion Unity, as it is now should maybe be installed only on netbooks and Gnome on computers with bigger screens.

I personally prefer Gnome- Shell, too but I think that this unnecessary fragmentation isn't very helpful to the Linux-experience.

Instead of everyone forking his own project Canonical and The Gnome project should work out a solution which pleases most developers and users and could be used by other distros, too.

Maybe a huge survey or a petition would help?
