Okay, here's what I'm doing with AWN on my Eee:
I'm trying to balance simplicity with having quick access to all the things I need. I like Unity's workflow, but it's not very pixel-thrifty. I'm used to auto-hiding panels, but I got tired of having to guess where the buttons would be when they reappeared.
This seemed like a decent compromise: a Unity-style launcher provided by DockbarX with reasonably large buttons that overhangs the window by just a bit.
The two buttons filling out the space on the left are Compiz Scale at the upper left and my XRandr/Synclient toggle for reading mode on the lower. I could just have those set to corner clicks in the same places (and have in the past) but this is more intuitive to me.

I know I shouldn't use tildes for decoration, but they always make me feel at home~
