i8kfan BIOS override
I have a Dell Latitude E5500 laptop and I was trying to setup the fan control daemon to sort out my noise and thermal issues and I found that what ever I set i8kfan too it instantly got reset to what it was.
This made the daemon behaviour very amusing as it would pulse the fan on and off, ok so solution.
You need to get into a hidden BIOS screen and this can even be done in an OS if you don't want to reboot;
Hold Fn+Shift and type 15324, the numlock capslock lights should flash (they did for me) then you can press Fn+r and you are presented with the thermal control overrides, CPU throttling and Fan control.
Hope this helps someone, this isn't guarantee to work on your Dell but worth a try.
Edit:- Might be worth this going in Laptops/How-tos sub forum opps, can a mod move it please?
