    requested uri too large

I've scoured some mac forums to no avail and am hoping someone has had this problem before.
My girlfriend's mac is behaving funny. It's connected to the internet. The machine knows its connected and my girlfriend can connect to her gmail through gmail but we can't get safari or firefox to load any website.
It just keeps saying "Requested-URI Too Large - The requested URL's length exceeds the capacity limit for this server."
We've reset safari and firefox and still nothing. Any suggestions???

    Additional:
My laptop is loaded with Ubuntu 10.04 and has no problems what-so-ever getting on the internet.

    In firefox,
preferences > advanced > Connection Settings > Check Automatic proxy configuration URL
    and reload.
This allows firefox to access the web but safari is still not working.

    In Safari,

Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Proxies - Change Settings > Uncheck HTTP and HTTPS and check Automatic Proxy Configuration.
    OK
    APPLY

This fixed the Safari issue but her Dropbox cannot connect to the internet. But atleast we got Safari to load webpages.
