Can see networks but can't connect

Hi, I have an MSI Wind U100 netbook running Maverick, and it has a Realtek RTL8187SE Wireless controller according to lshw. My computer can "see" some wireless networks where they are present, meaning when I click on the little network icon at the top of my screen it shows the available networks. But when I click on them to connect, the icon does its little "connecting" motion, but I never receive any message saying "Connected" and when I open Firefox and try to browse to google.com, it says "Server not found". Any ideas?

(By the way, I am still sort of a noob; speak slowly)

Re: Can see networks but can't connect

    Hi,
I am a noob but guess what I had exactly the same problem.

First looks like you do see the networks around. Ok, that is a good sign. do this after opening a terminal

    type: sudo ifconfig

and see if you see any wireless network such as wlan0

    also type: sudo iwconfig

See if you get some information such as net address, hwdr address etc.
If so then you are probably connected!!

Now to ensure that you can browse do the following in the terminal
    type: sudo dhclient

At the end of the output you will see IP address being printed out.
You should be all set now.
To test go to System -> Adm -> Network Tools
In the network tools go to Ping
type in the IP address that you get from the dhclient output (as I said it will be at the end).
enter and see if you see any bytes flowing around. If so you are all set. Go to the browser and have fun.

If not please do not lose heart. Ubuntu community is great. I was helpless but it took me about a week to figure out solution though I must confess I have no idea of the deeper concepts and had to hunt with patience.

    Good luck!!

Re: Can see networks but can't connect

Right now my computer can't see any wireless networks. I know there is a network present because my older netbook computer is seeing it right now, though it won't connect because the network belongs to one of my neighbors and I don't know the password.

But anyway, here are the results of what it shows right now:

Re: Can see networks but can't connect

This morning when I first turned on my computer it was able to see that network that my other netbook computer was picking up last night at full strength, but then when I opened up a terminal to run those commands again, I looked in the list of available networks and it was gone again. Maybe my wireless receiver is just too weak or something. I would like to get this fixed before I go on a business trip in about 4 weeks; are there external receivers that I can buy to pick up signals better? Or is there a way to uninstall and reinstall the driver for the one that's built in? Any solution would be great at this point.

This is what I am using. It works right out of the box.

Re: Can see networks but can't connect

    Hi,
Looks like your wlan0 is getting connected. Did you try to ping 192.168.1.97 with eth0 disconnected and after dhclient?

My question is - if you do not have free wireless (or known passwords) in the neighborhood how can you expect to be connected wireless? Do you have a wireless router locally that you can connect to? Did you set it up with your wireless card i.e., WEP or WAP sign in name and password? That would have got you connected.

I am using an edimax USB wireless port. Unfortunately my PCI is inactivated but the edimax worked out of box - EW711UAn.

Re: Can see networks but can't connect

I was able to connect to a wireless network at a restaurant down the road just the other day. It seems to me that this is a hardware problem and not software, because it is connecting fine when in the presence of a strong enough connection. It just isn't picking up the signals as strong as the old netbook (an Asus Eee PC 900) does. I think I'll just need to buy an external receiver.
