    Install ubuntu with low memory

    Hello!

I have an old laptop - samsung q25, it has only 256 mb of RAM and i want to install ubuntu 10.10 on it. System requirements says ubuntu needs minimum 256 mb, so looks like i fit in. But installation and even preview doesn't work.. Ubuntu starts, i can see the wallpaper, a cursor, but there's no panels or installation menus..

Is it possible to install ubuntu in console mode?

P.S.: Debian 5 installed successfully on this laptop.

Re: Install ubuntu with low memory

You're probably looking at old system requirements, see the new version here-

    Recommended Minimum System Requirements-
    Ubuntu Desktop Edition

    • 1 GHz x86 processor
    • 1GB of system memory (RAM)
    • 15GB of hard-drive space (although this can be split onto 2 drives, a 5Gb / and a 10Gb /home fairly easily)
    • Graphics card and monitor capable of 1024 by 768
    • Either a CD/DVD Drive or a USB port (or both)
    • Internet access is helpful

While you can often run Ubuntu on hardware of lower (and sometimes much lower) specification using a minimal install, performance will suffer. Most users (especially those new to Ubuntu) risk frustration if they ignore these suggestions.

    Ubuntu Desktop (GUI) Installation

    • 1 GHz x86 processor
    • 512MB of system memory (RAM)
    • 5GB of disk space (for OS files; consideration should be given to the (often very large) size of user files that will occupy the /home directory)
    • Graphics card and monitor capable of 1024x768
    • Cd/Dvd-drive
    • Sound support, if you need sound.
    • Internet access is helpful

Without upgrading the memory you would be better off with one of these or antiX

You can run a regular Ubuntu with 512 MB or more, but with 256 I would go for one of these:

I have good experience with Lubuntu on old hardware.

I agree with mörgæs. LUbuntu would probably be your best bet for a nice Ubuntu experience on the older computer. Or other lightweight distros will work but if you have to have Ubuntu use LUbuntu
