how can I change the default boot vga (intel or nvidia) with a terminal?

change the configuration file /etc/eee1015pn/ds.conf with a text editor of your choice:

## set the default GPU mode 
## Options: intel|nvidia|optimus
defaultgpu=intel

Are you able to watch youtube flash videos smoothly in 720p or 1080p?
If so, how did you go about it?
If not, what is the best we can expect and how to do it?

I just tested this:

- boot to nvidia mode
- install smplayer (mplayer frontend) and a recent mplayer build and configure it to use vdpau
- use smplayers youtube browser (just press F11 in smplayer)
- in the Youtube Browser settings I set it to use '720p mp4' streams
- enter the url to the youtube video and hit search ( eg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txRAL49PCYM )

This works good for me.

mplayer is installed and up to date
installed smplayer
changed the Output Driver to vdpau
I can't find a youtube section and F11 does nothing

do I have to install smtube?

yes i thought apt auto-pulls smtube with smplayer, sorry.

get it from smplayer's developer ppa https://launchpad.net/~rvm/+archive/smplayer

I got it installed last night v0.8.6
It would play fine at 720p but then the video would start to lag behind the audio until it was seconds out of sync

I'm having trouble with video in general and all of a sudden.

I've since tried to start fresh but still with the same lagging/studdering video playback (my main concern is getting XBMC/vdpau to play nice)

Do you plan on a hardware upgrade any time soon? the 1015pn has been good to me but only when I can squeeze max performance out of it.

I got a new Laptop from the Company i work for. It's a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Ultrabook which is a very nice (but unfortunatly also very expensive) Laptop

Nope, it's a work laptop. At home i still prefer my workstation.

I will defiantly release a last version with ubuntu 14.04 support, but this will be the last ubuntu release i support for the eee 1015pn. This hardware will reach end of life pretty soon and i doubt there are still may eee users out there in the wild.

Unfortunately nvidias dualgpu implementation shipped with trusty & nvidia 331 does not support our eee's so i updated the scripts for ubuntu trusty. Hopefully this will be the last release because i expect that the nvidia devs add more platforms to their implementation soon.

To install eee1015pn-acpitools Version 0.11.0 add the ppa to your system and install the eee1015pn-acpitools Package or run a system upgrade if you have already done so. To trigger such an upgrade now use

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Changelog:

* added Ubuntu Trusty 14.04 support (Use the PPA to install!)
* optimus: fixed detection of nvidia gpu power state
* use unity-control-center for display management with intel on trusty

Distribution Upgrades:
If you plan to upgrade to trusty make sure that you have min. 0.11.0 installed. After the upgrade completed run

sudo display-settings regenerate-glx

and reboot.
