    Grub displays the each kernel twice

    I have removed all the kernels other than 35-25 and 32-28. I want to keep them but even though I can see only those two when I look in Synaptic, when I run update-grub I get two entries for each kernel. I have added the result of update-grub. This makes my grub list really long. Any ideas? Can one of them be custom compilation generated while installing something. May be then it would have exactly the same number but not show on synaptic package manager? How can I check if that is so or not?

    Edit: I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and have ATI Catalyst as graphics driver.

    Normally, you would have two entries in the grub menu for each version of the kernel, a normal entry and a recovery mode entry. So, for two versions of the kernel that would be four menu entries altogether (ignoring the memtest entries). But your update-grub output does look as though it is counting each kernel twice. Do you have four or eight kernel entries altogether?

    Download and run the boot script and post the results.txt file within code tags for legibility. You can do this with the # icon in the message toolbar. That will tell us what is on your system and, hopefully, why each kernel is being counted twice.

    Sorry for the late reply. The kernel and its recovery both of them are repeated so I ran the script and here is the result file.

    The reason why both kernels are appearing twice is that update-grub is parsing a file called /etc/grub.d/10_linux_proxy which must contain references to both kernels. Which, as far as I can see, is superfluous because update-grub detects any kernels on the system by parsing /etc/grub.d/10_linux.

    The fix is simple, but before I give that a couple of comments. I've never seen a 10_linux_proxy file before - it is on none of my systems - but a quick google throws up plenty of threads on this forum where people's boot script output show the presence of this file. It must have come from somewhere. I'll dig a little deeper, but in the meantime, please post the contents of your /etc/grub.d/10_linux_proxy file. The comments at the beginning of the file might give us a clue. I see that you have a remnant of legacy grub, so you must have updated from legacy grub to grub2 - perhaps it's something to do with that. Please also post the output of:

    It will be useful to know if any other non-standard files are in there as well.

    The fix. This will stop update-grub parsing the 10_linux_proxy file, at least for now, but we do need to find out how it got there. It may have been important. From a terminal:

    You also appear to be running 10.10, and consequently have grub2 installed in the mbr of the drive. However, in sda2 you have one of grub legacy's files (/boot/grub/Menu.lst). Have you repaired grub2 at any time? Perhaps with an old guide?

    I've been doing a bit of digging on this forum only for the time being and those threads that show 10_linux_proxy in grub.cfg in a boot script output do not show any reference to 10_linux - which is the usual file. But your grub.cfg shows both. Before you run the chmod command I posted, make sure you do have a /etc/grub.d/10_linux file with something in it. Since grub.cfg says you have, I'm 99.9999% sure that it's OK to disable the 10_linux_proxy file by chmodding it, but I'd like to resolve the 0.0001% uncertainty.

    I downloaded Grub Customizer yesterday. It is a brilliant utility that allows you to remove menu entries using a GUI. It does lots of other things too.

    By the way I switched to grub2 on my own when I was using 9 something I am not sure. May be 10.04. I was using grub2 when I upgraded to 10.10. I recently recovered my grub2 after Windows 7 installation without using the live cd. I used NeoGrub under windows to load my grub2. Which worked and in ubuntu I used update-grub to put things back in order. I tried to install gnome3 and it always did not work. I tried to build it again gave errors always at different steps and I gave up eventually but my system really got unstable I think. Where should I look for the remains of grub_legacy. Is new grub2 also using boot/grub folder?

    I did the chmod and it looks like it solved the problem. I checked it using the grub customizer. I had 2 different linux entries with the same content and one of them became unchecked after doing chmod -x. I think I will remove that script from the configuration using the grub-customizer after restarting once

    Thanks for the help. Now next challenge is getting gnome3 to work

    Fascinating. I think I can see what 10_linux_proxy is up to now that I can see what's in it. What is interesting is that not only do I not have 10_linux_proxy in /etc/grub.d/, but no bin or proxifiedScripts files/folders either. I guess they are all of a package with whatever added 10_linux_proxy. I'm still curious to know what that was though.

    For the record, this is the contents of my /etc/grub.d/, Maverick freshly installed only yesterday, so near as default as you're going to get:
