I was hoping to change it to an image. And even change the text. But even so, this is Lubuntu, so I'm not even sure if it would work....?

ok then. have a look for a folder called something like ".LXDE" or something with lxde in it. if you do have one of those folders have a look for a image file called something like "splash.png" or similar.
    I'll help where i can.

Search aptitude or synaptic package manager for plymouth-theme

The system which provides the boot splash on ubuntu/lubuntu as of 10.04 is called plymouth.
Search synaptic package manager for plymouth-theme there are a few packaged themes that aren't distro specific..
Do a web search on plymouth theme for information on installing unpackaged themes and making your own.
