telepathy-butterfly displays no user avatar

So telepathy-butterfly does not allow me to set an avatar at all. If I remove it (and default to haze) my contact's avatars don't download.

Is there a work around to force empathy to display your avatar in chat (With telepathy-butterfly) or alternatively, force haze to download all contact's avatars?
