File manager corrupted?

I had exactly the same issue!

I have Ubuntu 10.10 with dual monitors on a nvidia card, all was fine till I changed the nvidia configuration to 'Separate X-Screen' so I could configure each screen separately, having set to 'Separate X-Screen' and re-booted I got this issue, returning to 'TwinView' mode removed the problem.

Hopefully that will help anyone attempting to de-bug this annoying issue.
