Good idea if I install grub on disks without specifying new root the error grub jumps out at loading as old root disk at the moment of loading misses (can not find UUID)

And how to install unconfigured grub?
Usage grub-install/dev/sdc leads to setting with a binding to leaking root

    I think a problem here:

    root@office: ~ # cat/mnt/md0/grub/grub.cfg
    ..........

    insmod raid
insmod mdraid # than differs raid from mdraid?
    insmod part_msdos
    insmod part_msdos
    insmod part_msdos # why 3 times part_msdos?
    insmod ext2
    set root = ' (md1) ' #the link on/boot or on root is underlined?
    ..........

It hard resets? No grub rescue prompt or anything? Posting the results of the bootinfo script would help.

    Re: Grub2 + mdadm RAID1 = cycle reset before grub menu :(

    Vi ringrazio in anticipo...

Are you sure it is trying to boot from one of the drives in the array? Try booting from another one maybe? It looks right to me. At worst you should get a rescue shell if it is booting from one of the drives in the array.

I have tried to be loaded from each of three disks (select from BIOS):

    root@office:~# grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/md1 --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sdc
    Installation finished. No error reported.
    root@office:~# grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/md1 --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sdd
    Installation finished. No error reported.
    root@office:~# grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/md1 --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sde
    Installation finished. No error reported.

, a situation identical - HARD reset before menu and shell of grub

    Re: Grub2 + mdadm RAID1 = cycle reset before grub menu :(

Sorry for my bad english, I'm French...

I don't think the problem is the raid array. If something wrong with your raid array, you will have an error like "error: no file found" at boot but not a hard reset.

I have a similar problem where grub2 freeze and reboot before menu display. I tried many different things and maybe my solution can work for you.

I used Super Grub Disk for booting (option "detect OS") on my computer and make the change below.

First, uninstall grub, grub2, grub-pc,... with "--purge" for removing config files.
You have an raid array, make sure your "/etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf" contains array's definitions, if not, do this "mdadm --examine --scan | sudo tee -a /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf".
Now, install grub2 and do a "grub-update", "update-initramfs -u" and "grub-install" on one or more disk, like you want.

For me, it's here that does all difference. I know it's not very clean to modify "grub.cfg" directly, but you can try like me and if it doesn't work, regenerated a new one with "grub-update".
Edit "/boot/grub/grub.cfg" and comment (just two lines) the line with "terminal_output gfxterm" and "insmod gettext".

You must verify three things too:
    - the first two "set root='(X)'" must be with X your 'root' device (in my case "set root='(md0)'" where md0 is a raid 1 array with two disk and contain /etc,/boot,/usr,...). In your case, md1 is the '/' device.
    - the other "set root='(X)'" (in "menuentry") must be with X your device containing boot directory. In your case, md0 is directly the boot directory, so you don't have to put "/boot/" prefix for "linux" and "initrd" command.
    - all "search --no-floppy ..." must have the uuid corresponding to the disk set in line before.

Finally, I had a problem with "fd0 read error" on boot, simply disable floppy in your BIOS.

If it doesn't work, simply edit "grub.cfg" file and put many "echo '1'", "echo '2'", ... after each line. Then, just reboot and see after which displaying number grub hard reset. It's like that I have debugging my problem and found two instruction that freezed my grub loader.

    Hope this help you.

    Re: Grub2 + mdadm RAID1 = cycle reset before grub menu :(

vharseko: Last week I was testing md Raid10 performance with different layouts, num of devices and also degraded state (on Ubu10.04). Your array shouldn'be in degraded state, unless something went wrong during/after creating it. Between others I've tested 2-drive raid10 - and its state was Clean.

    Re: Grub2 + mdadm RAID1 = cycle reset before grub menu :(

    Hello!
I have the same problem in debian (sorry for offtopic), i installed raid1 from debian installer, and when I take off first hdd i can't boot from second disk (sdb) in array, i can't see grub and have reset and so again, but when i use only first one disk (sda) all work fine. And most interesting that if i change places hdd in sata channels I can boot!

    Code:
