Sound applet has no control over volume after messing wih alsamixer

My microphone wasn't working so I entered alsamixer to amp up it's volume and see what's wrong.

Not sure what I did wrong but now the gnome volume control applet in the Indicator does not affect system volume at all.

I can even mute it and it will not mute anything.

The volume controls in alsamixer work fine and changing the volume in alsamixer affect system volume immediately.

What could I have done? How can I get back volume control inside gnome?

    Rebooting did not help.

    P.S.
If it matters my microphone is working after I unmuted it.

Okay re-installing ubuntu fixed this but visually it still shows as always 100%. slider is moving down and and lowering actual volume but show the numeric value 100%.

    Hi,

Try this, left click on the sound icon in the panel, from the menu that appears choose preferences, when this screen appears there are a number of options and settings to play with, I always found the mplayer's sound to be very low till I changed the settings here.

    Regards, Ellgor.
