Clicking on Folders Tries to Install Them as Themes

In Maverick, a theme installation failed. Now when I try to click on certain folders in my home directory (including home itself), instead of opening the folder, the appearances and preferences dialogue box opens with this error:

There was an error installing the selected file. "home" does not appear to be a valid theme
    How can I fix this?

    Thanks,
    Les.

Right click the desktop and select create folder . Right click the folder and select open with another application . Select file browser from the menu and make sure remember this application is checked. Remove the folder when finished.

The default application for opening home folders was somehow changed to appearance preferences.

Wow, thank you! It worked! I did a search using the error message, and found many others had this problem, but no one posted a solution. Worked like a charm.

    Blessings,
    Les.

Had the same problem. Fiddled around with different things but when I followed your directions it worked. Thank you.

    Thanks!

It's worked for me too although I had a different problem. If I clicked on an item of "Places", on the Panel, it gave me an empty window with "Error". Even though the pathway was right, it did not open the subfolder,
