I sat down today to estimate [1] how much time it would take to finish 2.8. As far as I can see it's something like 1.5 months for one person working full-time. The problem is that most of it is re single-window mode, the developer who worked on it is mostly inactive these days and there is no spec from usability expert on the final bits of implementation yet.

So really we'll just have to wait and see.

Is this true?

It's a shame really, that such a great and an important piece of software like Gimp has so few devs dedicated to it. I have already sent a donation, hope it helps.
