in your case it would be better to make a fresh install.

If you had LTS (8.04) you could just upgrade it.
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.

If you want to go the upgrade route rather than reinstall.

This may work for you: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades

Then again it may just be easier to back-up your data and install fresh.

Hey thanks guys, i kinda figured it was just that time.

should i go for 10.10, i liked what i saw on youtube and on my ex-girlfriends computer, or should i go for 10.04 so next time i reach this point i wont have to do fresh install?

It depends how often you want to upgrade you system, 10.10 will be supported for the usual 18 months (so April 2012), whereas 10.04 will be supported until April 2013 on the desktop.

If it's feasible, I'd recommend trying a live CD of 10.10 so you can see if there's any issues before installing it

haha live cd's. sry, i keep forgetting how awesome ubuntu linux is.

can i install things on the live cd's like compiz and such, or is it just the basics?

obviously not on the cd, but while using it.

or even better, is it impossible to use a usb drive as a live tryout medium.

Yes you can install and test packages while using a live CD. I highly recommend 10.04 if you do not like upgrading, however the software center is much nicer on 10.10. The next release (11.04) looks very promising, so it might be worth it to go 10.10 and upgrade to that when it is released.
