    America's Army 3 in Wine

Has anyone been able to make this run perfectly in Wine? I only found out today that this game was free, so I started downloading it in Steam (almost completed). I didn't really check with WineHQ until a while after the download started. So far the Wine site has been showing only Bronze and Silver ratings, with a few graphic issues. However, these post on the Wine site seemed somewhat outdated. Maybe there are persons here who have gotten it to work seamlessly.

I would be delighted to hear from such persons as to what I need to install from Winetricks and so fort.

Thanks. I found that out last night too, and I'm half way through downloading it. However, the Linux version is the older one. It will just have to do for me as 3 did not work in Wine. I ended up messing Wine up and now I'll need to reset and reinstall what I had installed.

AA 3 is rated silver but there's some tweaks
    What works

    Assuming mouse patch is used:

    • A number of training levels.
    • Most aspects of multiplayer on non-PunkBuster servers (at least works by filtering out PunkBuster servers beforehand, noting the IP, and joining the server via console).
    • "Explore" mode seems to work fine on all five maps.

    What does not

    • PunkBuster
    • Graphical bugs: no display of video in medical training; flickering graphics on walls; map (F4) is blank; etc.
    • No HUD => no easy way to send messages other than "enemy spotted".
    • Haven't got text chat to work.
    • Securing main objectives, e.g. shutting valve on Pipeline.
    • Healing teammates (works sometimes, but can bug out nastily...)
    • Crashes and other bugs.

    What was not tested

    • Voice chat.
    • Trying different video settings (used 1440x900 with most settings on low or medium).

    Additional Comments

    Using AA 3.0.5 with GF8600GT.

After one has figured out how to install it via Steam, the game installation seems to work fine. However, some packages (e.g. VC2008 runtime) may need to be installed manually.

Hey Ronnie, thanks for the info. I'll have to re-download it
as I was following some of the comments on the Wine site regarding using Winetricks additions, which after following them caused everything in Wine to stop working. I ended up doing a hard reset of Wine, deleting everything. I'll try this as soon as have it downloaded with Steam.

If Punkbuster doesn't work, you are going to have an extremely hard time trying to find a server. From what I can remember, pretty much almost every server on the listing requires you to have PB enabled in order to play on it. ;/

Well, sounds like I'm better off saving myself the trouble by just trying only the native version.
