I have found it easier to install "Ubuntu Tweak" first and install GE from there. Tweak makes life a lot easier to do a lot of things in Ubuntu.
Six Saturdays a week for me.

The easiest way to get GE is to enable the medibuntu repositories and install via Software Center or Synaptic.

Google it, here is the info anyway,
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-twe...a-updates.html
Install Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.7 in Ubuntu 10.10/10.04
Open the terminal and run the following commands
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
