What I did:
- downloaded 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 from here
- installed it (w/out the updates)
- right click on the desktop --> "Change Desktop Background" (can also go to System>Preferences>Appearance)
- go to "Visual Effects" tab
- select the option "Extra"
- click "close"
now the effects work as they should (ie wobbly windows and stuff)
next I perform the update (through System>Administration>Update Manager)
now the effects are broken (they are no longer working)
I retry steps 3 through to 5
here comes another problem - when I do step 5, the program ?freezes/crashes? (not sure what its called... it's like when a program "greys out" on you and won't let you select anything) and most of the time, does a search for drivers (usually the first time you click it, after updating) the search for drivers doesn't last long though, when it's done, it just disappears without any messages saying whether-or-not it found any or what up
it's kind of like it's going to do something and you just have to wait while it attempts to resolve some issue
after a while, it reverts the choice back to "None", and is no-longer "greyed out" (I have also tried selecting "Normal", but it's just the same as clicking on "Extra")
I have done this a few times over, with the same thing happening every-time (even going so far as to do a re-download from the link at step 1)
any suggestions/fixes to this problem?
also tried checking for further updates ...none so far
