When I'm working in KDE, that's exactly what I use to burn. When in gnome, I'm pretty fond of Brasero. If I'm having to use Windows, InfraRecorder is preferred. My only problem with K3B is that it looks too cartoony.

I still like LibreOffice over MS Office... but that's personal opinion.

I'd say Blender is on par with some of the professional rendering packages for thousands per license.

I was about to mention Blender myself. Fantastic program.

I haven't used any of the Windows-based media centers, but I'm a fan of both XBMC and mythtv.

All the above citations, of course. Not reasonable to exclude Star Office / Open Office / Libre Office from the discussion. Star Gmbh, as is then was, and its heirs and successors have been putting MS Office to shame every minute since about 1992. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

Not sure about GIMP. Not a graphic arts pro; but I know a lot who are - and who use the GIMP by choice.

may not have a clue what VLC , GIMP , or anything ,abbreviated XYZ ,

to some a name like blender , could mean a new type of cement mixer

it may help by posting what the application is for and what makes it standout from the competition

I think Deluge can beat μTorrent.

I haven't used μTorrent much but Deluge seems like a more competent Bittorrent client to me,.

μTorrent is not commercial software, but so far, nothing can beat it.
