Firefox and IE
Firefox, OpenSSH, Apache, MySQL, BSD (vs. Unix/Plan 9) and maybe Blender.

All the above citations, of course. Not reasonable to exclude Star Office / Open Office / Libre Office from the discussion. Star Gmbh, as is then was, and its heirs and successors have been putting MS Office to shame every minute since about 1992. Sorry, but that's the way it is.
Not sure about GIMP. Not a graphic arts pro; but I know a lot who are - and who use the GIMP by choice.

Newcomers to computing or desktop users thinking about trying linux for specific applications
may not have a clue what VLC , GIMP , or anything ,abbreviated XYZ ,
to some a name like blender , could mean a new type of cement mixer
it may help by posting what the application is for and what makes it standout from the competition
Surprised no ones mentioned it yet but, TheGimp kicks Photoshops..........oh wait, nevermind.
Sorry, I had to do it!
I'll play:
Any X11 Window Manager vs. Windows's Window Manager
Compiz vs. OSX's Window Manager.
