Hauppauge HVR-2250 OTA video corruption problem
So I built my HTPC/PVR, got it running, worked out some kinks, and have upgraded to ubuntu 10.10 and 0.24 Mythtv.
One very annoying problem.
On one of the 2250's two tuners, one of the local channel presents corrupted video about 80% of the time⋯both LiveTV and recorded.
I live about 15 miles from the local towers which are some of the tallest in the country and are over flat earth. I have a Winegard powered/amplified (15dB) antenna pointed directly at the towers which can be seen on a clear day. The coax comes directly from the antenna to a power supply coax box for the Winegard, then directly to a splitter, one for the television and one for the 2250. The tv gets great reception and the signal strength is good over all local channels according to its signal strength meter.
Still one channel on one of the 2250's tuner suffers video corruption. As a test, I install a second inline coax RF amplifier (10dB) at the input of the 2250, and the problem goes away. [SOLVED]
I concluded the 2250s need 6-9dB stronger signal than my old Toshiba 47" pseudo-1080p LCD receiver.
Re: Hauppauge HVR-2250 OTA video corruption problem
I get great reception here with a 4-bay uhf antenna on a 3rd floor balcony. I had to double to an 8 bay in order for the 2250 to get decent reception and now with upgraded antenna my television still gets 5 more stations than the 2250.
My old DirecTV hd dvr (1st generation ntsc) gets better reception than the 2250.
I have stations both to the east and west, so I removed the screen from the back of the antenna to make it a dipole, with great results.
Amplification seems to make no difference, but shielding off-axis multipath reflections from neighboring buildings by hanging the removed screen off the awning helped tremendously. There is also one very close and strong station in that direction and it seems blocking it out helped too, although I lost Star Trek in the bargain.
