Ubuntu 10.10 Jack won't play via headphone out socket

I have Ubuntu 10.10 running on a laptop.

When I connect the laptop to an external amp and speakers I can play ogg/mp3 files and hear system audio.

When I just Jack (midi keyboard plugged in) I get the sound via the laptop speakers but when I try connecting to the amp as described above I don't get any sound.

Does anyone know how to resolve this?

    Thanks

in the jack connections panel, click on 'system' in the right pane to open it, playback 1&2 are your laptop speakers, playback 3&4 is the laptop headphone socket.

whatever u want connected to the headphones, connect to playback 3&4 in jack.
