Wubi megathread

Hello!

I can not boot Ubuntu, the computer restarts every time I try. I followed the steps in the solutions.
My problem is that when I get to step:

# sudo mount -o loop ... #

It does not recognize the file system, so try the following:

# sudo mount -t ext4 -o loop ... #

and others file systems (ext3, ext2) but it still does not do anything with them.

I've tried with Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04.1. I run the terminal from the live cd of Ubuntu 10.10 (Try Ubuntu).

@Javier_SI,

Run chkdsk - boot into Windows, go to My Computer, right click C: drive, Properties, Tools, Check disk for errors, automatically fix. Reboot to complete check. I also recommend defragmenting your C: drive if necessary.

If this doesn't fix it, try reinstalling as you have only a 'half-installed' Wubi. So you can't mount the root.disk: there is nothing on it yet.

Hi all,

I'm trying to fix Wubi on my laptop which is running XP. I went over to the Windows for the first time in a month, I cleared out some temp files and deleted some unnecessary programs and defragmented C: but didn't touch anything related to Wubi.
I can boot Windows just fine, but when I select Ubuntu I see an error message "no wublidr" and the computer restarts. So I guess that lands me in the Problem #2 category.

I booted from a live CD, determined which partition to access but when I get to the step:
sudo cp /mnt/boot/grub/grub.cfg /mnt/boot/grub/grub.cfg.copy
I found that the grub folder is completely empty. Now I'm stuck.
I've tried to read through the forum posts, but I can't seem to find a solution to this particular problem. Sorry if it's a repeat.

@bcow, what version of Ubuntu are you using as a live CD. You'll need something from 9.10 onwards so that it can mount the root.disk as it uses the ext4 file system. I've seen this problem before when someone tried to use an 8.04 CD to repair a current Wubi install.

PS try booting windows and running CHKDSK. I've been hearing reports that this can sometimes fix the problem.

I was using 8.04! I'm burning a 10.04 disk right now and will test it tomorrow. Thanks!

I'm pretty tired at the moment but I'll try to be clear. I've screwed up Grub and can't get any of the fixes to work. My dirs: are a little odd, compared to the samples provided. I've included the Boot Info Script Summary in the attachment. I was attempting to get restrictedFormats for DvD playing but I think I cut and pasted the wrong set of commands, since the propblem poped up right after this change on reboot. Thank you for any help you can provide. Oh, almost forgot, I can boot into windows no problem, but all Ubuntu options, recovery or previous kernal versions won't boot. Thanks again.

I had previously copied c:\ubuntu\winboot\wubildr over c:\wubildr because I had seen it in a different forum as a possible fix.
I'm also getting bombarded with update requests in Ubuntu -- should I do the permanent fix before running any of these updates?

Try using Solution 1 for Problem 2, which mounts the root.disk and then edits the grub.cfg file.

Yes do the permanent fix. If you run the updates beforehand it will likely automatically refresh the grub.cfg file and cause the problem again.

That "no wubildr" message is actually normal. Wubi uses grub4dos to chain to Grub2 and this goes through each partition (in the order that the BIOS sees it) looking for the wubildr file (in the root of the partition). If it doesn't find it, it says "Try (hdX,Y): FAT16 : NO WUBILDR" for each partition - obviously the partition type will be different depending on your setup. The only problem with this is if it encounters an ext4 partition before finding the wubildr - the version of grub4dos that wubi uses is old and can't read ext4 partitions - so it hangs.
