I've tried both programs that are in the repositories for my HP printer and none work. It's hard to start a photo project when you have no idea how much ink you have left. Can anyone help please?

Which programs have you tried? Have you installed hplip-gui ? That should show you ink levels etc. Only caveat is that it has problems showing ink levels on "some" cartridges that are clones or have been refilled.
Hope this helps.
I don't remember because I uninstalled them when they didn't work. However I did install hplip-gui per your advice and HPLIP toolbox suddenly showed up system preferences. I had installed the toolbox but never could find it. I guess it needed the Gui file. Now I have ink indicators. Thank you!
Is there seriously no way to find out ink levels in a printer connected by USB? This is not very good. The advice is quite cryptic on this issue. If someone can give me something better than "log out, boot up windows, then log back in" I'm waiting.
Things have changed quite a bit since that thread was created 3 years ago, I'd suggest you start a new thread, as this one is closed.
