Invalid display mode for monitor from 10.10 Live USB

I recently decided to switch back to Ubuntu so I made a 10.10 Desktop 32 bit Live USB key.

The first menu shows up fine. But when I try to boot the live environment it spits out a couple pages of boot status messages then my monitor shuts off and starts blinking "Invalid Mode". It's as if Ubuntu is trying to use an unsupported resolution or refresh rate.

I've never run into this before. I have a 37" 1080P LCD monitor hooked up via DVI to my ATI 4870 HD. I've run Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 on this machine before without problems although it was with an Nvidia card.

Google is unhelpful as everything suggests using Safe Graphics Mode which doesn't exist on the 10.10 Live installer.

Any help would be appreciated. Looking forward to getting back off Windows.

In the boot up screen, where you have to decide whether to try ubuntu, install it, etc., aren't there options for help, language, keymap, modes?
If so, pressing f4 (for modes) lets you select safe graphics mode for your installation.
